The Westys Story: A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Community
Since 1950, Westys has been more than just a business—it's been a cornerstone of our community for over seven decades. From individuals to major construction projects and residential builders, we proudly provide specialized services that support our local area. Through team sponsorships, nurturing apprentices, and partnerships with local businesses, Westys remains dedicated to strengthening the community.

It all began with Wesley J. Wright, fondly known as “Westy.” A blacksmith by trade, Westy established the company in 1950, serving as the local farrier and repairing everything from farm equipment to tools for the surrounding orchards and market gardens. Remarkably, the original forge still stands on our site today as a tribute to our roots. By the 1960s, the business expanded to include steel sales, setting the stage for future growth.
In 1971, after Westy's untimely passing at the age of 58, his wife Shirl and 21-year-old son Don took the helm during a challenging time. Fueled by their determination, they preserved the jobs of employees and the trust of long-standing customers. By the 1980s, their commitment paid off as the business diversified into retail steel sales and structural steelwork. This expansion led to the construction of a dedicated warehouse equipped with cranes to meet the rising demand.
As suburban developments replaced local farms, Westys adapted by providing cutting, bending, folding, and fabricating services for residential and structural steel needs. Don’s brother Ernie joined the company after a distinguished Air Force career, further enhancing its offerings with retail sales of metalworking tools and welding machines.
In the mid-1990s, the family legacy extended to Don’s eldest son, Adam, who embarked on an apprenticeship in boiler-making and steel fabrication. With years of hands-on experience both in the workshop and onsite, Adam honed his skills in estimating and managing residential projects. By the mid-2000s, Adam assumed leadership, bringing fresh energy and a vision for expansion.
Under Adam’s stewardship, Westys ventured into industrial and commercial construction winning its first tender in the 2000s This success necessitated growth beyond the Ferntree Gully site, leading to a second location in Knoxfield and eventually the construction of a purpose-built facility in Pakenham in 2015. This state-of-the-art workshop allowed the company to take on larger projects, despite the economic challenges of the Global Financial Crisis.
Today, Westys thrives as a dynamic team with diverse expertise, serving sectors such as education, healthcare, commercial, industrial, and residential construction. From fabricating schools and hospitals to shopping centers and commercial landscaping projects, we bring an honest, professional, and collaborative approach to every endeavor.
Our story is one of resilience, growth, and a steadfast commitment to the community. At Westys, we don’t just build steel structures; we build trust, relationships, and a legacy that continues to stand the test of time.
